Truffle Hunting from Rovinj: Which Tour Is Worth It?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 6 min read
If truffles are the point, book the truffle hunting tour in Paladini with a three-course tasting menu: €120 per person, three hours, 4.9 stars from 161 reviews. It is the only truffle hunt in this group with more than twelve reviews, and it combines a walk with a trained dog and a lunch built around fresh local truffles. It is also among the most expensive of the five per hour, which the numbers below explain.
Five tours compared
| Tour | Duration | Price | Rating | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Truffle hunting in Paladini with a three-course tasting menu | 3 hours | €120 per person | 4.9 from 161 reviews | Hunt with a dog, then lunch |
| Truffle hunting and lunch with a local family | 2.5 hours | €115 per person | 4.8 from 9 reviews | Hunt, then a meal with truffles |
| Truffle hunting and hilltop towns from Rovinj or Pula | 6 hours | €114 per person | 4.3 from 12 reviews | Forest hunt plus Motovun and Grožnjan |
| Guided tour of inner Istria with food tasting | 8 hours | €92 per person | 5.0 from 98 reviews | Grožnjan, Motovun and Pazin, local products |
| Istria day tour from Rovinj to Poreč, Grožnjan and Motovun | 8 hours | €109 per person | 4.8 from 160 reviews | Truffle products tasting only |
Only the first three involve hunting. The other two are sightseeing days with a tasting, and the tasting on the Rovinj day tour is of truffle products, not a hunt.
Price per hour, and what it tells you
Divide the price by the time and the picture changes. The Paladini hunt works out at €40 an hour, the family tour at €46, the six-hour hilltop tour at about €19, and the eight-hour inner Istria tour at €11.50. The hunt costs more per hour because the lunch is the product: you pay for a three-course menu cooked with fresh truffles as well as for the walk. If you only want the hunt, the family tour is €5 cheaper and half an hour shorter, but nine reviews make it a smaller bet.

When the season is
White truffles peak in October, according to the Istria tourist board, and they are the most expensive and valuable kind. Festivals run across the autumn, from September into November. Truffles grow in the area between Pazin, Buje and Buzet, especially in the Mirna valley and the Motovun forest, and specially trained dogs find them underground.
The listings do not say which truffle you will find on which date, so if white truffle matters to you, check what the page says about the season for your travel dates, or message the operator. Do not assume a hunt in another month finds the same thing.
The practical question: getting there
The Paladini tour starts in Paladini, not in Rovinj. The booking page lists no pick-up from Rovinj, only a start at Karlić Truffles in Paladini, so ask the operator how to get there before you book. Of the three hunts, only the six-hour hilltop tour names Rovinj as a starting point, and it also starts from Pula. If the meeting point is outside Rovinj and no pick-up is offered, you will need a car; compare rental cars for Rovinj and check the excess and fuel policy before you pay.
What about wine?
None of the truffle listings is a winery visit, and the food and wine tour that does exist, an eight-hour tasting day from Rovinj at €113.34, has 3.0 stars from two reviews. That is too thin to rely on. The three-course menu in Paladini includes homemade red and white wine, brandies and water on the inclusions list, and the description speaks of unlimited wine.
When to skip a truffle tour
Skip it if you simply like the flavour. The tourist board lists truffle dishes such as fuži, gnocchi and fritada on local tavern menus, and you can eat them without a three-hour tour. Skip it, too, if you want to see several towns in one day: the Poreč, Grožnjan and Motovun day tour covers more ground. For more ideas, browse truffle hunting in Istria or all things to do in Rovinj.
The verdict
Book the Paladini hunt for the experience and the lunch. Choose the hilltop tour if you want a hunt and two medieval towns in one six-hour day, and the inner Istria tour if you want food and views at a lower price per hour with no hunting at all.
