Istria in One Day from Rovinj: Is the Poreč, Grožnjan and Motovun Tour Worth It?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read

A hilltop town with terracotta roofs, stone houses and a long fortified wall above green hills under a blue sky

For most visitors without a car, the guided day tour from Rovinj to Poreč, Grožnjan and Motovun is the easiest way to see inland Istria: €109, eight hours, 4.8 stars from 160 reviews. If you can drive and want to set your own pace, a rental car beats it. If truffles are the point, a separate truffle tour is better value for that single purpose.

What the day looks like

The tour starts with pick-up in Rovinj, and the booking page lists seven pick-up points: several hotels, the bus station and an address on the waterfront. Check which one fits you when you book. The guide drives an air-conditioned vehicle and speaks English. The itinerary has the following rhythm, according to the listing.

Poreč has a UNESCO-listed basilica with golden mosaics, Grožnjan was abandoned after the Second World War and later revived by artists, and Motovun sits high above the Mirna valley. You taste truffle products in Motovun; nobody hunts for truffles on this tour.

The honest trade-offs

Eight hours include about two hours and 45 minutes in the van, going by the times on the page. That leaves roughly four and a quarter hours of stops across three towns. Two paid extras, the basilica and the Motovun city walls, are not in the €109. A reviewer calls the pace well judged and the driver-guide patient with questions, and the tour suits people who like being told things.

If you hoped to taste several wines or do a long lunch, this is not that trip. The only food in the programme is the truffle product tasting.

When a rental car is better

The three towns lie in different directions, so a car lets you drop Poreč or stay longer in Motovun. You also choose when to leave and can add a winery. The cost is parking, driving on narrow hill roads and planning the day yourself. If that suits you, compare rental cars for Rovinj and decide on the length of rental first; the tour price is a useful benchmark for a day. Check the current insurance terms and the excess on the rental page before you pay.

Two alternatives

A second guided day tour, the guided tour of inner Istria with food tasting, costs €92, takes eight hours and has a perfect 5.0 from 98 reviews. Its stops are a photo stop at the Lim Fjord, Grožnjan, Motovun and the Pazin Abyss. It is listed under Pula, but the booking page also names pick-up points in Rovinj; confirm when booking that pick-up there is possible for your date.

For a food-focused day, the truffle hunting tour with a three-course tasting menu near Paladini takes three hours, costs €120 and has 4.9 stars from 161 reviews. It brings you to the truffle dog and a lunch made with fresh truffles. Local tourism sources describe the white truffle season as running from about October to January, peaking in November and December; black truffles are available much of the year. Our page on truffle hunting in Istria lists the options.

Who should skip it

Anyone who dislikes long drives or likes to linger in a hilltop town for more than an hour or so will find the day rushed. The listing mentions cobbled streets and city walls, and expressly lists people with limited mobility and wheelchair users as not suitable.

The verdict

Book the Poreč, Grožnjan and Motovun day tour if you have no car and want a guide. Hire a car if you want freedom, and choose the truffle tour if the food is the reason. For other days, see more things to do in Rovinj or our quad safari comparison.
