Dolphins at Sunset from Rovinj: Which Boat Trip Should You Book?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read

The yellow-railed bow of a wooden boat on calm sea under a pink and grey dusk sky, with a dark island on the horizon

For most people the best choice is the small catamaran sunset tour with a local skipper: €40 for 1.5 hours, a perfect 5.0 from 532 reviews, groups of up to 18. If you want the cheapest departure from Rovinj itself, take the €30 boat trip; if you want a promise that you do not leave empty-handed, pay more for the speedboat with free rebooking.

Nobody can guarantee dolphins, because they are wild animals. What differs between the trips is the size of the boat, the price, and what the operator does when the dolphins stay away.

The big-value pick: the €30 boat trip

The most-reviewed dolphin trip that actually starts in Rovinj leaves from the harbour near Valdibora. According to the description you get a panoramic tour past Rovinj island and the old town, a welcome drink (grappa, white wine, orange juice or water) and then the search for dolphins. According to the booking page up to 20 people can be on board, and its 4.6 is the lowest rating in the table, so read recent reviews on the booking page before you commit. Parking near the meeting point is mentioned.

The catamaran: small and highly rated

The catamaran trip is run by a family business and caps groups at 18, according to the booking page. Its start time moves with the season: the operator writes that sunset tours begin anywhere between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm and that you are told the exact time a few days ahead. The description names the ACI Marina as the starting point, while the meeting-point field points to a spot on the waterfront promenade, so check the voucher for the actual address. The operator is honest about the odds too: it says dolphin encounters happen often, but nature has the final say.

Speedboats: more thrill, more money

The two speedboat trips at €40 and €69 both take a maximum of ten people. The cheaper one has the same operator as the €30 boat trip and includes a welcome drink. The €69 one is the only Rovinj trip in this group with a stated fallback: if you see no dolphins, you can join the next available tour free of charge. Its skipper looks for a quiet area away from other dolphin boats, switches off the engine when close, and keeps a distance. If other boats have found the animals first, the description says they join them. It lists six pick-up points in Rovinj and free drinks (water, beer, cola, fanta, iced tea). On the toilet the booking page contradicts itself (“toilet onboard” in one place, “no toilet onboard” in another), so ask before you go.

The 75-minute tour at €65 is shorter and starts at the Dolphin Dock Station. The listing gives the start as 7:30 pm with return at 8:45 pm and recommends a jacket. Speedboats are quick and exposed, so take a layer even in summer.

The Vrsar option

The €25 speedboat from Vrsar is the cheapest here and has the most reviews. The operator promises that you see dolphins or get your money back. The catch is the departure point: it starts at the Vrsar marina, not in Rovinj, so you need a way to get there and back after sunset. The booking page says it requires good weather and a minimum number of travellers.

Who should skip it

The €40 speedboat trip lists wheelchair users, people prone to seasickness and babies under one year as not suitable. The €69 trip names pregnant women and people with mobility impairments. The Vrsar trip is marked as wheelchair accessible on its booking page; confirm with the operator beforehand how boarding works. Our guide to Rovinj sunset boat trips and the dolphin-watching category list every departure.

The verdict

Book the catamaran sunset tour if you want a calm evening with a small group. Choose the €69 speedboat only if the free rebooking matters to you, and the €30 boat trip if the budget decides. For a longer evening that includes a barbecue and a swim, see our comparison of Lim Fjord trips from Rovinj or the overview of speedboat tours.
