Lim Fjord from Rovinj: BBQ Boat Trip or Kayak?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read

A wooden excursion boat with two masts and a few people on deck, silhouetted against an orange sunset sky over calm water

For most people the four-hour sunset trip on a wooden boat is the better Lim Fjord day out: €60, 4.8 stars from 487 reviews, and it fits a cave stop, two swims, dinner on a charcoal grill and a dolphin search into one evening. Take the guided kayak tour if you would rather paddle than sail, but note that it has only 13 reviews so far.

The Lim Fjord (Limski Kanal) is a flooded karst valley between Rovinj and Vrsar. The operators describe it as about 10 km long, flanked by steep cliffs. It has been legally protected as a landscape since 1964 and a marine reserve since 1980, according to the Istrian tourist board, and it is known for oyster and mussel farming.

The sunset trip with barbecue

The boat is a traditional wooden vessel and leaves from the Rovinj waterfront. According to the itinerary, a 25-minute sightseeing cruise comes first, then 45 minutes at the Pirate Cave with swimming, then 45 minutes in the Lim Fjord for the meal and a swim, then about 1.5 hours back towards Rovinj with the sunset and the dolphin search. The crew serves a fig-brandy aperitif, drinks and a grilled dinner of sardines with pork or chicken. Guides speak Croatian, English, German and Italian, though one German reviewer says no German-speaking guide was on board. If you need a particular language, ask the operator.

The Pirate Cave entrance is paid separately: €1 per person, which comes with a postcard. A recent review mentions that the boat felt crowded at full capacity; the booking page states up to 40 people for this tour.

The five-hour day with Red Island

The same family crew runs this longer trip. It starts with a panorama of the old town, then about an hour on Sveti Andrija, part of the Red Island archipelago, with an aperitif and canapés. After that comes the fjord, the Pirate Cave stop, lunch on the grill and a last swim in the bay of Saline. The booking page counts four swim stops and a group of up to 45 people. People prone to seasickness are listed as not suitable. One reviewer called the cave itself not worth the visit, noting that you can simply swim instead; the swimming and the crew get most of the praise.

The kayak option

Be careful with the word kayak. The two best-known kayak tours from Rovinj, at €36 and €45, paddle around the old town and the island of Sveta Katarina, not the Lim Fjord. Only the Lim Bay kayak tour paddles in the fjord. It picks you up in Rovinj, drives about 20 minutes each way, and gives you roughly three hours on the water. The operator stresses that large motor boats are restricted in the bay, which makes for calm paddling, and that you pass old oyster and mussel farms. Reviewers call it suitable for beginners. Thirteen reviews are too few to call it proven, so treat the 5.0 with caution.

The cheap option from Vrsar

The €25 pirate-style boat starts in Vrsar, not Rovinj, and runs for two hours with a swim at the Pirate Cave and free drinks. It takes up to 40 people. The booking page warns of 50 steps to the top of the cave, with no lift, and lists people with mobility impairments as not suitable. Its 4.3 stars are the lowest here; the price is the reason to choose it.

The verdict

If the evening and the food matter, book the sunset Lim Fjord trip. If you would rather be in the water for a whole day, the five-hour trip adds Red Island. See also our guides to Red Island from Rovinj and sunset dolphin trips, or browse every Lim Fjord boat tour.
