Rovinj Rental Cars: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Charges Mean?
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
Compare the total liability, not just the daily price. Before booking a Rovinj rental car, open the conditions and find five entries: the excess, security deposit, accepted payment card, fuel policy and charge for an additional driver. CDW can be included while a substantial excess still remains. No single deposit or counter-insurance price applies to every vehicle and supplier, so this article deliberately gives no invented average. Compare Rovinj rentals and open each offer’s conditions before choosing.
Excess and CDW are not the same promise
CDW limits what the rental company may charge for covered body damage under the contract. The excess is the part you may still have to pay. It can vary by car class and supplier, while glass, tyres, underside, keys or incorrect fuel may be treated separately. Read the exclusions rather than assuming the words “full protection” erase every responsibility.
There may also be two products in the same journey: the rental company’s CDW and a separate reimbursement cover bought through a comparison site. With reimbursement, the rental company can still charge you first and the insurer assesses the claim later. Keep the contract, check-out report, photographs, invoices and any police document the policy requests.
Why the deposit matters before you land
The security deposit is an amount blocked on the main driver’s card; it is not automatically the excess and it is not necessarily taken as a final payment. The conditions determine the card type, name, available credit and release process. A debit card that paid online may still be refused for the deposit at the desk.
Check the figure and accepted cards for the exact offer, then leave room below the card limit for normal travel spending. If the named driver cannot present the required card, the apparent bargain can turn into a new contract or an extra product at collection.
The counter questions worth answering in advance
Fuel terms should state what you receive and what you return. “Full to full” is easy to verify if you keep the final fuel receipt; other policies can include a service charge. Add every driver who will actually drive, because an unlisted driver can undermine cover. Check the supplier’s minimum age and any young-driver fee instead of treating a general Croatian driving age as a rental rule.
For collection at Pula Airport, also verify the desk location and flight-delay procedure. For a Rovinj branch, check the return time and whether an after-hours key drop changes the inspection. These operational details are where a cheap rate can become inconvenient without any hidden conspiracy.
At collection and return
Match existing marks to the check-out sheet before moving the car. Photograph every side, wheels, windscreen, fuel gauge and mileage in good light. If something is missing, have it added in writing. On return, refuel as the contract requires, photograph the car in its space, and request a receipt or return record when staff are present.
The recommendation
Choose the offer whose deposit your card can carry and whose worst-case excess you understand. A slightly dearer booking with workable collection hours may be the rational choice. Compare the terms for Rovinj rental cars, then save the selected conditions offline before travelling.
