Do You Need a Rental Car in Rovinj?
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
For a short stay centred on Rovinj, no: you do not need a rental car. The old town is pedestrianised, the waterfront and historic lanes are made for walking, and a car left outside the centre costs money without shortening your day. Rent one if Rovinj is your base for two or more independent trips into inland Istria, or if collecting children and luggage from Pula Airport matters more than avoiding parking. If that describes your holiday, compare rental cars in Rovinj; otherwise book the transfer or excursion you actually need.
The car-free answer inside Rovinj
Rovinj’s old-town peninsula is the wrong place to plan around a vehicle. You leave the car outside the pedestrian core, then walk over polished stone and uphill lanes anyway. Beaches around Mulini and the Golden Cape are reached along the coastal promenade, while boats to Red Island leave from the waterfront. A car does not solve either journey.
The city tourism office lists municipal barrier car parks including Velika Valdibora and Mala Valdibora, plus open parking zones around town. Prices and charging periods change by zone and season, so check the official Rovinj parking page rather than choosing accommodation on an old parking figure. Ask an old-town host exactly where luggage can be dropped and where the car stays overnight.
When hiring one earns its place
A car changes the holiday once the destination is not Rovinj. Motovun and Grožnjan sit inland; wineries, olive-oil producers and small villages are scattered rather than joined by one convenient visitor route. Independent drivers can leave before tour groups, stop at one producer instead of several, and return when they choose. This is useful for a family carrying a pushchair or for travellers staying in a rural villa.
It is less convincing for one outing. Rental collection, the deposit, fuel policy and parking remain your responsibility for the whole booking. The eight-hour Istria day tour through Poreč, Grožnjan and Motovun already removes the driving and includes three towns. For Red Island or the Lim Fjord, choose a boat from Rovinj rather than driving around the coast.
Three travellers, three answers
Old-town couple without a driving licence: stay without a car. Walk locally and buy the airport transfer separately. Family with a small child: a car can simplify seats, bags and inland stops, but confirm the child-seat category and your accommodation’s parking before payment; do not assume either is included. Day visitor arriving by ship or coach: hiring for a few hours adds collection and return friction just when time is shortest.
Pula Airport is the strongest reason to hire from arrival, especially for a rural second stop after Rovinj. Compare the airport and town branches as separate searches: a lower headline rate can lose its advantage once collection hours, fuel and the exact excess are considered.
The decision
Stay car-free for Rovinj plus one organised excursion. Hire for several inland days, an airport-to-villa itinerary or frequent child-and-luggage moves. If you do hire, compare the full rental terms for Rovinj, not merely the first daily price shown.
